What if an AU...

Where the Xianle quartet are dropped into another universe - one where MQ and FX never left XL.

Maybe it was some curse or some miracle that allowed people to see what would happen if their lives followed a different path? And all three - XL, MQ and FX - always wondered what would happen if they stayed.

So, they get to see it.

FX and MQ stayed by their prince's side and the misery continued - MQ tried his best to keep everyone afloat, but being constantly undermined and distrusted started to push him towards the edge. His pulling away caused FX and XL to distrust him even more, and it was so easy for Jun Wu to point them against each other.

And fire.

All it took was something small - the last valuable thing the Queen owned going missing in the night. MQ finding a suspiciously well-paid job for some travelling priest and bringing home actual money, happy to feed them all properly for the first time in months... but he didn't even get to the shack when FX and XL came to meet him and the accusations started. Thief. Disrespectful. Betrayal. Scum.

MQ, worn down to the bone, finally snapping and his anger pouring out. You're useless. Weak. Pampered little shits that wouldn't know how to light fire without him. Stand there accusing him of selfishness while all they do is take and take! The useless king who led the country to ruin, useless queen that can't prepare a cup of rice! Useless prince that wanted to save the common people, but cannot lower himself to walk amongst them! Useless bodyguard who cannot do anything worthwhile, but run his mouth!

And Feng Xin loses it - pain and hunger and despair and hate overflow, and in a moment of blind rage he stabs Mu Qing.

Mu Qing dies cursing them all - useless hypocrites. He dies laughing - who next they will turn on? He dies in the dirt, the food he brought spilled around him.

And, like in a play, the queen rushes to the scene - she found the hairpin! It wasn't lost! She must have misplaced it! It wasn't....

...it wasn't stolen.

But by then it's useless. Useless. Useless. Useless.

Feng Xin, hands covered in blood, breaks. The blade sill stained with Mu Qing's blood easily parts flesh on his neck, and before Xie Lian can react, Feng Xin falls into the same dirt he murdered Mu Qing in.

They haven't left - and Xie Lian still ended up alone.

They haven't left - but this was worse. Worse. Worse.

They haven't left - and all it accomplished was more arrows in Jun Wu's quiver, more ways to hurt Xie Lian, more ways to try and break him. Comparing how fast the new medal got awarded for FX EF vs. the Valieva situation doesn't make sense to me. With doping (especially involving a minor) you need a more involved process because it's a very serious accusation against the athlete. Also it's a team event, so rescoring is more complicated than an individual one.

With an overtime inquiry they just checked the timestamps, it's an administrative fuckup. There's no discussion of bans, no one needs to mount a serious defense because there's no accusation against any of the athletes or coaches. Of course it's gonna get resolved faster.

How do you think the Bear getting renewed for season 4 may have impacted the finale episode for season 3. I keep thinking what if Syd and Carmy were going to get together in season 3 finale when the show and writers thought season 3 was the final season, but then they changed it because the show was extending another season.

I've always been very anti Syd and Carmy getting together at the last minute for a lot of reasons. One it would be very gross to give Claire/Carmy's romance all that screen time but not give any for Sydney/Carmy when they actually get together. It would just add to all those people accusing them of just being fan service. But I also think it would just be bad for Carmy dating Sydney to be like the magical solution to all their problems and a happily ever after in the end and it would also just be robbing us of seeing their true partnership. Cause even if they do get together, their problems won't be immediately solved. I think Season 4 will be Syd and Carmy restarting from a positive place. Cause you can't start at fucked.

I think had the series only been 3 seasons, they would have had the switch to a more lighter note halfway through the season, and it was also supposed to have more episodes. I think Season 3 will be very angsty for the most part right until the very end when their dynamic changes. I think they were maybe a bit hesitant or afraid to go full sydcarmy on screen in the end, but obviously the people want it, and FX/Disney is a business at the end of the day.

this scene always hit me hard and was one of the first scenes that made me notice how highly FX regards XL, how even 800 years later the reminder of those hard days in the past and FX leaving (what was likely his biggest regret) is such a painful topic for FX, how FX hates hearing anyone insult XL and how MQ accusing him of leaving for such a cruel reason angered FX so much that he resorted to attacking with his fists (when he could have fought with spiritual powers)

episodes 29&30 thoughts

i’m so glad fei jie is ok and we finally got shadow’s identity! (he’s the younger brother of some guy i don’t remember). but i was just complaining how we don’t see enough martial arts fan xian and then their fight happened. the choreography was amazing! fan xian probably wouldn’t have lost if his internal energy wasn’t so chaotic

when chen ping ping was talking about how grudges simmer and grow the hate inside you, he was definitely talking from experience. you can tell it kinda hurt CPP to hear fan xian accuse him of wanting to kill him (sir what do you expect haha i love their interactions). he’ll manipulate and lie to him but killing him is crossing the line! i think he might also be frustrated that FX isn’t recognizing the danger of the emperor (he keeps reminding him to be cautious, no one can guess the thoughts of the emperor). or perhaps fan xian has come to realize there is no “figuring out” the emperor, he is just going to deal with situations as they come.

the emperor continues to amaze and terrify me. between his secrets and the way he thinks up these incredibly convoluted plans, mei chang su would be impressed. so from my understanding, there were two planned assassinations. CPP was the architect of shadow (under the emperor’s orders? idk i was confused on that part. or did CPP really want to kill?) and the other planned by the emperor himself to test fan xian and other princes of their loyalty while at the same time eliminating political nuisances. he’s also hiding how powerful he is (did you catch the prince’s reactions? they don’t know their father at all lol). i’m more concerned about his plans for fan xian. did he actually try save his life out of a selfless desire to save his son or was it for a more pragmatic purpose like he doesn’t want to lose his connection to the divine temple and any other talents fan xian may have inherited from his mother? both could be true, these are complex characters and i love that.

i liked the scene where the doctor is telling the emperor about fan xian’s condition. with the emotional music in the background and the crescendo when the emperor decides he will try to save FX. i felt for a moment he may not be a complete monster (for a moment). good thing fan xian had another solution.

since fan xian’s meridians are destroyed and the only one who knows how to restore them is ku he, i wonder if that will be explored in s3. in one of the earlier previews, it shows fan xian on a ship with lin wan’er staying behind idk idk i’m excited

And succeeding (in something that the King of Xianle didn't succeed in) as one of the last things we hear of Gu Zi is that he says that his dad can't die because he's told him that he has cultivated to be the king of the three realms or something. Because even if Gu Zi didn't know what the king of the three realms was, it was something that his father was. So it must have been quite a powerful, mighty thing to be? Do you ever think about Qi Rong whose last words, when being asked "What do you have to be held in high regard?" was "SO WHAT IF YOU ALL LOOK DOWN ON ME? THIS ANCESTOR...THIS ANCESTOR...THIS ANCESTOR HAS A SON!"

Do you ever think about Mu Qing, whose earliest experience of law and Justice was his father being beheaded, and then his teacher who wouldn't even accept him as his disciple due to Mu Qing being poor and the son of an executed man, never lifting a finger to stop the relentless bullying he got by rich kids but being more than willing to kick him out if he stood up for himself, and in one memorable occasion accused Mu Qing of "intentionally withholding communication" without even hearing him out first while "his [Mei Nianqing's] words and expression showed he already firmly believed Mu Qing to be sabotaging the affair purposely", (And then didn't apologize to him when his accusations turned out to be false. And while MNQ was so quick to accuse him, apparently hours of nimbly & skillfully carrying a 9 ft Zhanmaodo that a group of people together couldn't pull out of a wall wasn't impressive enough for him to give Mu Qing so much as a nod of approval. He couldn't even just not disagree when the queen praised Mu Qing and compared him to Feng Xin who at 14 was already good enough at martial art to be selected as the bodyguard of the crown prince while MQ only started cultivating at 14 but caught up to FX in 3 years.) still, even as the Martial God of the Southwest with seven thousand temples dedicated to him fully believing that unless he takes matters into his own hands he won't receive any justice? (And note how he thinks if he stays and waits for trial he will face "death" even though as far as we know there's no mention of any god being sentenced to death, at worst even with a kill count as impressive as Pei Su they get sentenced to banishment)? And of how his story constantly revolves around him being accused of crimes he didn't commit from start to finish? As he's introduced to the audience as someone who left Xie Lian behind as soon as Xie Lian got banished and treats Xie Lian with contempt even though he owed everything to him, as he's accused of intentionally withholding communication to sabotage the Shangyuan festival as a 17-year-old, as he's thought to have left Xie Lian & Feng Xin behind and teamed up with the other junior officials against Xie Lian, as Xie Lian second-guesses his intentions when Mu Qing brings him medicine, as he's first suspected of being the father of Cuo Cuo and then the culprit behind Jian Lan's forced abortion, as he's accused of trying to murder Feng Xin when everyone was evacuating the Heavenly Capital, as he's accused of conspiring with Jun Wu against Xie Lian. Despite how he was the only Heavenly official with a totally clean record with nothing to be used against him by Jun Wu and every time anyone suspects him of anything he has actually been doing good because he's a good, kind-hearted person. Do you ever think about how in the end he did end up with cursed shackles but got them voluntarily? Of how Mu Qing who was so sensitive to being accused that he would break a broom and run away when hearing Feng Xin's comment on how they couldn't invite too many people to search for the coral earring, and valued his hard-earned cultivation and statues so much, and his good deeds would always backfire in his face so bad that he believed "truly, there is no point in being a good person" but would still continue to try to do good without expecting anything in return, knowing that Jun Wu would try to frame him and paint him as a traitor every step of the way, and believing what Jun Wu had said about his friends being unwilling to believe him because they hated him, still decided to go to Mt. Tonglu to search for Feng Xin and stayed true to himself and his friends and did the right thing? and in the end, a hand reached out to him just before his fall. Because Xie Lian believed in him all along and sometimes just one person believing in you is enough. because as Xie Lian once said "I don't believe that good will brings bad returns." in the end the cursed shackles broke once and for all.

beginning to a beautiful love story?

So I read the webtoon Punch Drunk Love and I wanted to play with the idea that MQ had a rough past regarding his looks and social class (e.g. being accused of using his looks to sleep his way up the corporate ladder in XL's fam's company in the past) so he started dressing super plain to avoid negative attention at work. He was initially in accounting because money is more important than passion. But then he meets the office hunk, business department FX. They naturally became enemies until one day, FX accidentally knocks MQ's glasses off and his hair also comes a little loose, and FX gets a glimpse of MQ's actual self. He's stunned and very horny.

But he keeps it together until one office party where he became a pathetic drunk and this comic happened 😅

They start a rivals with benefits relationship and at some point, FX convinces MQ to pursue his passion and so MQ transfers to the design department. He was also convinced to be his true self and so suddenly MQ dresses like a model to work and everyone is SHOOK. He becomes the office beauty. ❤️

Thank you for your revised commentary! It seems that the general census of it ; morals are more black and white, the flow and description improves, and nice additional hualian scenes BUT the rest of the characters are sanitized and that includes xl himself which bums me out honestly because the original xl was flawed but still kind hearted.

NGL, it makes tgcf a bit boring though now aside from hualian content :/ i have heard people said Jian Lan and Feng xin story expands a bit more but im not seeing anyone talk about it? And all the threads im seeing said some of Jian Lan scenes are cut or moved? So what is the truth 😭

Hi Anon! Thank you for the ask! I'm happy to hear you're enjoying reading the commentary even though it's what it is... Better flow in some parts and more Hualian but sanitized does seem to be an apt way to describe it... there was a point where I started to feel like 'revised' started to take on a different meaning...

Also you and I are of the same mind when it comes to Jian Lan + Feng Xin because I have also heard rumors about their story being expanded but have never been able to find evidence of it. I can't say for certain if anything has been expanded yet because there are parts I haven't read but this is what I have found so far:

The Ghost Inn chapters are cut, which means Jian Lan's scene with Fu Yao is cut & the confrontation with Feng Xin does not occur before Mt Tonglu (and neither does the Hualian conversation about how XL was terrified of FX leaving and HC noting that JL/FX's love just wasn't strong enough if it fell apart). This scene is not gone though - instead it's moved to Book 5 when Feng Xin is under house arrest (with the Hualian convo included). It's also combined with the scene that was there originally resulting in one longer conversation. I haven't really done a close read yet though so I don't know how much of the dialogue was changed.

But I do think it's an interesting change considering the Hualian conversation now occurs after Book 4 where we, the readers, know the context of FX leaving while before it was part of the buildup...

Also as far as I can tell, I think MQ's involvement with the ghost fetus is also gone (But I don't have full confirmation of this yet because there's a lot I haven't read yet)

Jian Lan's final scene with Xie Lian seems to be as before with her choosing to leave and not stay entangled with FX any longer. But I haven't compared it to the original yet so there may be some changes there

I still haven't read Book 4 in the revised yet, so if there's any extra JL content, it's might be there (but this is the book with the fewest changes, allegedly)

And as for the Xianle trio.... I don't know. The Xianle Trio's relationship was my favorite part of the original novel and a lot of that came from Book 2 which has been gutted beyond repair in the revision. Theirs was a very flawed friendship (and hardly even that) that then fell apart completely in Book 4, and 800 years later we see FengQing really wanting to reconnect, despite everything past and present, and by the end they truly feel reconciled and stronger for it

At the same time it feels easy to say their friendship in the revised is stronger earlier on because of the Book 2 gutting, because, well, all of the conflicts between them are gone, aside from FX unintentionally accusing MQ of theft. I feel like I really need to read the whole novel to be able to answer this (rather than the skipping around I'm doing), but it's kind of hard to read the revision and treat it as a separate thing because the original is VERY fresh in my head at the moment.

There is one dialogue in the Ghost Bride revised ver that I really like though - Xie Lian & Fu Yao have some very silly banter while going up Mt Yujun (before the carriage is attacked) and this is the sort of stuff I wish there was more of
